World of Warcraft is supposed to be a fun, challenging game that encourages teamwork, communication and cooperation.
However, the developers are still human and still fall short of the community’s expectations when it comes to difficulty, making a boss fight seem as routine as getting up in the morning. In my own personal opinion, here are some of the most boring raid bosses in each expansion.
Vanilla: Kurinnaxx, Ruins of Ahn’Qiraj (AQ20)
Aside from a cleave and the ability to see rogues in stealth, this was a basic tank and spank fight. The only real mechanics were not standing in front of him and avoiding Sand Trap.
The Burning Crusade: The Lurker Below, Serpentshrine Cavern
It took a lot of digging around in TBC to find the most boring boss fight since most of them are enjoyable. This is the basic “kill adds” fight that can be solo-tanked (although we did use two tanks for insurance). All one had to do to avoid Spout was jump underwater and the adds could be crowd controlled.
Wrath of the Lich King: Patchwerk, Naxxramas
This fight is so boring that it’s become synonymous with benchmarking someone’s DPS. In 25 man, you just had to add an extra tank.It was nearly impossible to lose this fight unless someone messed up the tank swap. Honorable Mention: Gothik the Harvester, Naxxramas (split raid in two, kill adds at Nausea, then kill Gothik himself).
Cataclysm: Spine of Deathwing (Normal), Dragon Soul
More mindless add killing that is only somewhat saved by needing to turn the boss to stop said add killing. However, some people would fail to stack and get blown off in a hilarious fashion.
Mists of Pandaria: Twin Emperors (Normal), Mogu’shan Vaults
Mindless add-killing followed by occasional DPSing the bosses. I fell asleep once doing this fight because we killed the adds so quickly. In my defense, it was also 3 AM, but something more exciting would have kept me awake.
Warlords of Draenor: Hellfire Assault (Normal/Heroic), Hellfire Citadel
Another mindless add-killing fight only made exciting if your fellow raiders manage to pop multiple metamorphoses and end up taxing the healers’ ability to heal. The only real work one has to do here is get the ammo boxes to the cannons.
